What's Old?

Here's the moldy back files of the "What's New?" page.

Hounds Site Revisions: 1999-2004

March 6, 2004
Revised Ale 2004 page with invitation letter.

February 13, 2004
The Syracuse page was massively out of date. I fixed and added links. I hope this makes it more usable.

January 6, 2004
Created this year's Ale 2004 page. Not much content yet, since invitation lists haven't been formalized yet.
Updated contacts page to include Ale Invitation Czar contact info.
Rewrote welcome page for greater readability.
Added 2004 performance page with speculative dance out listings.

July 8, 2003
I have updated the Hounds tune page, adding three tunes for new dances. Thanks to David and Laurel for helping in my quest for transcriptions.
Carpathian Tune - used for Belligerent Bluejay
Charles O'Connor - used for Just In Time
Ring O' Bells - used for dance of the same name
Mike hasn't put up dance notes for these yet but, when that occurs, I'll make the usual cross linkage.

July 5, 2003
Ale tour directions are now up on the web.

May 26, 2003
I created a new private Members-only Space and have instituted a "buy the webmaster a pint" policy for reminding Hounds of the password. I've forgotten what English morris team's website it was that gave me the idea. I'll credit them if I ever find it again.

May 22, 2003
I have been updating content but not documenting changes. The Dog Days Ale pages are coming along nicely and now have lists of performers, t-shirt pre-order information, and menus. Our dance out schedule is filling in pretty well and includes some local performances for a change.

January 18, 2003
The new Dog Days Ale pages for 2003 are up, albeit with minimal content. Watch that space! The 2003 dance out schedule is also up in a preliminary form.

January 17, 2003
Revised the PDF brochure to reflect current contact information. The HTML pages have been correct for quite some time.

May 28, 2002
The Ale t-shirt page is up with a representation of the design, prices, and an order form. Note that payment deadlines for Ale fees and t-shirt orders is June 30.

May 12, 2002
Extensive revisions to the tune notation replacing links to Mike's dance pages from the index page, reorganizing the order of things, and inserting links into individual tune pages. These were done at the request of several visitors wondering why we hadn't "taken more advantage of the non-linear structure of the web". (Rather liked that.) Also made links to external sources of dance notation where appropriate. Something of a citing sources effort.

Finally added the May Day photos from this year.

January 24, 2002
A new Ale 2002 page is up with contact information and preliminary details. Visit it for updated information.

January 17, 2002
Updated our recruitment page with new web address for the Westcott Community Center.

December 23, 2001
Updated Morris Dancing WebRing listing on the Morris Links page.

December 9, 2001
Updated Contact information. Dan Clark is our new squire. [Hail Dan] Note that the old PO box still listed on the brochure will be going away in 2002. Use Dan's address for contacts.

September 11, 2001
At the request of the Post-Standard, I removed two articles from the Hounds web site. Here's the email I received in response to my reply to them expressing astonishment at the request. The gist of the correspondence is contained in this email.

Subject: Re: Copyright infringement

Dear Mr. Keays,

I understand your question and wonderment at what harm this could cause
us. Part of what we sell is our intellectual property. The largest
expense a newspaper incurs is the pay and benefits of its staff. We
already resell our stories through such databases as Factive (formerly
Dow Jones Interactive), Dialogue, to libraries through such companies as
ProQuest and NewsBank. In the near future we will be selling back
stories through a webhosting mechanism to be found on Syracuse.com.
Already, people call our reader services department for back issue
stories and buy access to them. Therefore, we must guard against the
ever burgeoning tendency of others to essentially build databases of our
stories, where people will be able to gain access to them for free.

Some of these are small and limited data bases, some are more extensive.
But the longest journey begins with the first step and we need to stop
people from taking that first step.

If people were allowed, for example to copy and post a short story by
Tobias Wolff, one could argue it would be good publicity to help him
sell his memoirs and short story anthologies. But I can assure you, his
publishers would see it differently.

I hope you can understand our position. We hold no hard feelings. We are
just policing the net to guard against misappropriation of our
intellectual property.

Thank you,

I'll remove the story as you have requested. I'll take it down this
evening when I have access to the server. Similarly, I'll take down the
story from the Post-Standard.

But I have to ask: "What's the harm?" I fully attributed the stories
to the authors and to the papers. syracuse.com no longer has the
stories up (if it ever did have them) so I'm not taking business from
the site. Our intention, on the contrary, was to generate a little bit
of community support for the Syracuse papers since your reporters have
always been generous in their coverage of our May Day and other dance
events. It seemed like good PR for your papers.

Apparently not.

May 10, 2001
May Day photos section is added.

April 10, 2001
The May Day page is FINALLY finished. Also, a remembrance of Roy Judge.

March 15, 2001
I haven't been keeping this page up to date. The major changes to the website are new dance-out page, revised welcome page, and new pages in photo album. We're doing the Dog Days Ale again this summer so that page will be frequently updated.

December 3, 2000
Updated link to Morris Dancing Webring.

October 19, 2000
Further added to the Hounds photo album. Rearranged the directory structure significantly. A lot of your bookmarks will be broken by this change.

July 27, 2000
Began the process of adding current photos to the Hounds photo album. Will be adding May Day photos and CentenniAle photos soon. Also made links from the corresponding entries in the dance out page.

June 10 - July 3, 2000
Writing and revising the Ale page directions and tour information. Done with 5 days to spare!

May 30, 2000
Updated the Ale page and added page on our Ale T-shirt. Excerpted Andy Anderson to create a new "What Is Border Morris?" page.

May 9, 2000
Added a page corresponding to our printed brochure. Includes a printable HTML version.

May 2, 2000
Mike Miller revised his border dance notation page so I made the corresponding links from the music notation page.

February 28, 2000
Finally added the kit section. What finally prompted me to get going on this was the need to diagram how to make our bell pads for new team members. [Gotta get someone to pose for a photo.]

February 14, 2000
Added new email addresses to the members page. We're 100% online now!

February 9, 2000
Fixed link to Red Stags Morris on the Morris Links page.

January 15, 2000
Added the a new section to the Hounds page, incorporating some older pages of Morris Songs into the Hounds structure. Hopefully, this will spur me into adding some new material. I think this pretty much solidifies my decision to move the Hounds site back to this server. I won't be maintaining the mirror much longer.

January 14, 2000
Changed the directory structure yet again. But if you use the PURLs rather than the absolute URL, this should not be a problem. Added fourth PURL (for Dance Out) page. All the PURLs are listed on the Credits page.

January 4, 2000
Fixed WebRing section of Morris Link page; editted the link in the WebRing to reflect the site's PURL. Made mention of the WebRing link on the Credits page.

December 29, 1999
Retired the 1999 Performance Schedule and swapped in the new 2000 Performance Schedule. The Hounds URLs are Y2K compliant.

December 28, 1999
The date of the Hounds' Ale has been set: July 8-9, 2000.

December 28, 1999
Fixed WebRing section of Morris Link page; the homepage had changed.

December 23, 1999
Fixed contact information on contacts page.

December 12, 1999
Added this "What's New?" section.

December 9, 1999
Completely revised the former practice page, joining text from the Hounds' welcome page to it and renaming it the "Join Us" page.

December 5, 1999
I revised the team contacts page. The Hounds' had their annual meeting and elected John Piston as Squire. Karin Howe continues as Bag and takes on the role of Ale Czar for our 2000 Ale. Mike Miller continues as Border Fore and Tom Keays as Occasional Cotswold Fore. David Smukler volunteers as Ale Invitation Czar.

December 5, 1999
Reformatted the music notation pages and added the music to the "Not a Banana" dance. Added a new page that displays the music notation for all the Hounds' dances on a single page.

December 1, 1999
New listing for our upcoming performance on December 28, 1999 for the Burnet Park Zoo's "Night of Lights" celebration.

November 5, 1999
Revised the members page.

November 4, 1999
Added a Syracuse Events page; obligatory civic pride.
